2018 Goals Part 5: Find a Job That Makes Me Feel Valued and Pays Me What I’m Worth Part 2


I recently applied for a new position at work. It was related to my current department, but still different enough to where I would be able to learn something new and keep things interesting. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the specific software experience they were hoping for in this role, so in the end they decided to go with someone who did (external, of course).

In this case, I can understand their reasoning. It was a payroll position, and we have recently grown at an incredible rate, so they wanted someone whom they felt could jump right in and know what they are doing without needing much in the way of training. My counterargument had been that an outside person is still going to have to learn the ways of the company, its people, and all its other nuances, but in the end, that specific payroll knowledge was more important.

I can’t say I’m surprised. I pretty much realized a long time ago that this job is most likely never going to give me the chance to fly. I hate to sound like a downer there, but this isn’t the first time I’ve been overlooked, and I’ve had multiple people tell me they thought I was an underutilized resource around there. Additionally, I’ve done everything they’ve ever asked of me, as well as taken on new things on my own (been proactive), like “leadership development” projects and classes and achieving my MBA, and I still can’t seem to convince anyone to give me a chance to try something different.

I’m certainly not perfect. I have room for improvement, as we all do. For example, I don’t always interview well, and I admit it’s hard for me to toot my own horn. Realistically, that’s kind of what you have to do sometimes in order to stand out. I do know, however, that I’m able to learn anything I set my mind to, and rather quickly, so it’s a shame when people can’t see the potential resources they have right in front of their noses.

I don’t think I’m ready to move on from this company completely yet. Job security is very important to me, as I’m still working through quite a bit of debt. I don’t think I’m ready to handle the stress that can come with the uncertainty of a new job. I think when I’m able to pay off all my credit card debt and my cash flow is better, I’ll feel a little more comfortable branching out.

In preparation, I’ve spent the past few months going over some ideas I’ve had for what I might want to do next. For instance, I’ve been writing down all the things I’m passionate about in any way, and how they might transform into career opportunities, especially when paired with my current skillset. Some of them will probably remain hobbies or I might determine I don’t want to pursue them at all, and that’s okay. I think just going through this process type of process is important.

I’ve also thought about what I might be willing to pursue if I tried to get a second job for a while to supplement my income. I’ve considered a bookstore I enjoy that’s close to my current job, as well as a job with the closest minor league baseball team, in Florence, KY. I actually got that job, but a more interesting opportunity became available before I was even able to get started.

One of the passions I wrote down during my self-rediscovery process, and one of my goals for the year, was to learn more about wine, beer, and spirits. I already knew I loved these things, but I wanted to start learning more about why a beer or wine tastes a certain way and how that is achieved during the brewing process.

In January, I attended a special brunch at a brewery close to my current apartment. I never realized how close it was to me. The brewery, Fifty West Brewing Pub, had recently began canning three of their flagship beers, and the brunch was in honor of this achievement. The special menu they created for the event was delicious, and the beers were good too.

When I officially decided to go the second job route, Fifty West was one of the first place to pop into my mind. I contacted them, and was able to interview right away. They hired me on the spot, even though I hadn’t served tables about 12 years and probably didn’t come across as the most confidant interviewee!

So far, it has been the best second job choice I could have made. Financially, I make as much in three or four nights per week as I probably would have made the entire month at a bookstore or other retail establishment. It’s also just plain fun. Sure, it gets stressful at times, but everyone works really well together, and I couldn’t have asked for better teammates. Plus, what better perk is there than being able to relax with a Summer Gose while I wrap up my side work?!

A Review of BrewRiver GastroPub – Sunday, March 4th


To cap off an already awesome weekend (last weekend), my boyfriend’s cousin invited us to dine at BrewRiver GastroPub, another place I had never been. This time I pulled out my phone to get some pictures because I can’t keep having these boring, wordy blog posts or no one will ever come back!

BrewRiver opened in 2012 off Riverside Drive in Cincinnati (the East End). Their menu features classic New Orleans-style recipes, such as Shrimp Po’boys, plus your standard pub food, like burgers. They also carry 23 different craft beers on draft, but strangely, we ended up ordering a couple of beers they serve in cans, including the Monk’s Café Sour Ale (pictured) and the Abita Purple Haze. Both were very good.

The interior features exposed ductwork, and the walls old, black and white photos of Cincinnati, specifically of our riverboat heritage. The bar is setup impressively appearing to be the focal point inside an otherwise smallish space.
We started the meal portion of our night with appetizers. We ordered two: the Smoked Gouda Pimento Cheese and the Crispy Cilantro Pesto Stuffed Mushrooms. The Smoked Gouda Pimento Cheese is served with sourdough crostini’s, but they also brought the untoasted bread, which I thought was terrific. It offered differing textures. The cheese blend was good, especially spread along the toasty bread. The Crispy Cilantro Pesto Stuffed Mushrooms were tasty as well, but I wouldn’t say they stood apart from other stuffed mushrooms I’ve tried.

I’m not sure why I decided against something New Orleans-inspired, but I wish I hadn't. I wasn’t overly impressed with my burger. I ordered the Natchez, which is considered a customer favorite, and it was a bit overcooked for my taste (they only offer “pink or “no pink” as cooking options). It really wasn’t much to look at either. I tend to like burgers piled high with fun! I wouldn’t call it terrible, just not a burger I could recommend based on this experience alone. The fries we ordered; however, were interesting and flavorsome. You can’t find truffle oil-infused fries just anywhere, and I love all things mushroom.
When I go back, I will definitely try something Cajun, like the Shrimp Po’boy. My friend ended up ordering one, and it came out looking very great (I believe she approved).
I’ve recently read that BrewRiver is having some financial difficulties due to construction that took place along Riverside Drive. Apparently, one of Cincinnati’s main downtown waterlines started leaking in 2017, and while the city immediately took action to avoid a major landslide, BrewRiver saw their business decrease significantly as access to the restaurant was interrupted. The restaurant itself also saw some damage.

Taft's Ale House



Taft’s Ale House – Friday, March 2nd 

I’d heard a lot of good things about Taft’s, so when I was trying to decide where to go for my birthday it came up as an option and ended up winning. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of going on the night of the annual Bockfest Parade, so parking was difficult (and expensive) to find, and it took us nearly an hour and a half to get a table! It’s a really neat place, though.

Taft’s opened in 2015 in what’s considered the Over-the Rhine neighborhood. It’s a brewery, bar, and restaurant that apparently has three levels to it, but on this night we stayed on the 2nd level, which has the look of your typical beer hall, including large picnic-style tables, a bar right down the center, and a few TV’s. When you walk in, you immediately notice the classical, dramatic ceilings of an old-style church, which makes sense, as it’s located inside the former St. Paul’s German Evangelical Protestant Church on Race Street (built in 1850).

While we were waiting, we grabbed a round of beers from the bar. I tried the Cherrywood Amber, a red ale. It was smooth and had a just hint of smokiness. Once seated, service was very good and our meals arrived quickly. Their menu focuses on Tri-Tip Steak, so I chose something featuring it, the Cherrywood Tri-Tip Tacos (which went well with my beer since they marinate the sirloin in it). They were priced just right at $9.50 for 3, and I enjoyed them, especially the essence of cumin in the sour cream. I topped it off by trying their Maverick Chocolate Porter. The flavor of the cacao really stood out, but wasn’t overpowering. It was dark, but still went down very smoothly, much like the Amber.

It was a fun night with a few of my friends!

Recaps: Bad Tom Smith Brewery and Latitudes Bar & Bistro



It’s been a busy week and a half of trying new places and having fun! I’d love to review everything individually, but I didn’t really get a whole lot of pictures, so I’m not sure it’s worth it. For now, I’m just going to do a recap of the ones from last weekend.

Bad Tom’s Brewery (Friday, February 23rd): This brewery opened up in 2013, and recently expanded with a second location near Cleveland. As I mentioned in my last post, my boyfriend and I learned about Bad Tom’s through our bartender at Terry’s Turf Club. Terry’s offers a couple of Bad Tom’s beers on draft, and when we expressed interest in their selection, the bartender let us know they were just a block away.

We walked into a small brewery with only a few other guests, but a happy, lazy dog behind the main counter. The server there was very friendly and answered our questions about some of their selections, which included something for everyone, like Porter, IPA, and Pale Ale, etc. I ended up choosing their flagship beer on recommendation from a fellow guest, the Bad Tom Smith American Brown Ale, and it was good. I also bought myself a customary pint glass. I would go again, but next time, I’ll have to inquire about the story behind the brewery, featuring the outlaw, Bad Tom Smith. And get some pictures, of course.

Latitudes Bar & Bistro (Saturday, February 24th): I found another “Girl’s Night Out” Meetup group and attended my first meet up with them on this Saturday. This new group is geared toward ladies on my side of town, so that’s a nice bonus.

Latitudes is located in the strip mall of one of my local Kroger grocery stores, so I was surprised by how busy it was, especially considering the hideous weather we had that prior week and throughout that weekend. To be honest, I wasn’t particularly feeling like going out that night, and pretty much had to force myself to do so. I’m glad I convinced myself in the end, though, as I met a lot of really awesome people, and had fun dancing to a local band called, Candygram!

I can’t attest to their food, which seems to feature Mediterranean inspired faire, but they were able to make me something close to my favorite drink (basically a dark and stormy – Spiced Rum and Ginger Beer plus lime), so I was happy. My only real complaint would be how slow the service was, but I try not to judge things like that the first time I go somewhere. I have been a server in the past so I’m always willing to give a second chance.
